I love to take pictures and I love sharing them, especially with far-flung family and friends. Although we're often separated by hundreds -- and in many cases, thousands -- of miles, sharing the moments and events of life via the 'Net shrinks the distance and makes us feel a little closer.

Cache Creek Ridge Trail Hike : March 17, 2013: Had an excellent adventure with Ryan today. We hiked the 9.5-mile Cache Creek Ridge Trail... a very scenic path that traverses the height of land standing between Cache Creek to the west, and Bear Creek to the east. It was a perfect spring day... perfect temps, blooming wildflowers, verdant grasses and oaks. Caught some spectacular views of Cache Creek which flows past our house many miles upstream (trippy to think that we'd seen that water once before... maybe kayaked on it or even taken a swim in it!!) It was great to spend a few hours with Ryan, and share such an experience! As you will see, we were having a sweet time together in an awesome place. An added bonus... I was able to complete the mission despite in a sub-optimal state of fitness. Woulda been a bummer if Ry had had to pack me out the last few miles!!

Down-Time : March 11 to 13, 2013: We took a little trip! After the amazing "Gordon Lightfoot Concert" in Santa Rosa (documented in a separate gallery), we drove to Cloverdale and spent the night at the Best Western. Next morning, we had breakfast at the Historic Owl Cafe, visited with Melanie, Chris and Kenna, and then launched for the Mendocino Coast. Spent a couple of nights at Howard Creek Ranch... a rustic B&B WAY off the beaten track! We found much-needed peace and quiet... it was a perfect place to read (Karl), paint (Linda), experience the dramatic intersection of earth and ocean, catch up on sleep, and reconnect! Also took a couple of trips to explore Ft. Bragg and Westport. Only bad thing was having to come home just three days later!!! Three weeks would have been better... three months -- perfect! Although way too short, it was sweet! Take a peek...

Pvt. Joseph Foster, USMC : November 29-30, 2012: Our young friend Joseph Foster completed basic training at the United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot. After three challenging months, he is now a Marine! An incredible accomplishment. My Best Fathers Day Ever! : What a day!! A leisurely wake-up (no preachin' today)... Quiet meditation watching a couple of fawns romp in the field across the creek... Parker Family Reunion : December 26, 2011 - For the first time in a great many years, my parents, John & Ersa, were able to gather with my siblings & spouses Wayne & Vina, Gwenda & Michael, Sharon & Malcolm, Holly and Charlie, Lisa & Gary, Nancy & Garrett were all together, along with 21 out of their 25 grandchildren (+ plus several of their spouses/partners/friends) and 4 out of 5 of their great-granchildren. Wow! It was a lovely, meaningful and amazing experience. I loved every moment, and I think that was true for all who were gathered there from CA, FL, IL, ON, PA and many other far-flung places. Most of these photos were taken by my sister Holly, I took some using her camera, and there are a few from my own camera (woulda been more but my battery died and I forgot to bring a back-up.) I apologize for any duplicates... i'm uploading in a hurry. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving & Other November Moments : This year's Thanksgiving was just wonderful! We missed Kim & David, Ryan, Dustin & Sue who all had to be other places, but even so it was a happy, delightful occasion. Tuesday-Plus : This is a collection of photos from our last day with Gary, Lisa, Holly, Vina, Ryan, Melanie and Kenna, plus a few that didn't get posted in Phamily Phun (maybe). With multiple cameras and multiple photographers, the compilation and sorting got a little crazy. Apologies for any redundancy (although I could look at most of this material repeatedly and not get bored!!). Main subjects include a hike in Cache Creek Preservation Area, lunch at Cactus Grill, and a sunset cruise on Clear Lake in Mike Heintz's boat. It was an awesome last day together!! Enjoy!

Snow Day!!! : February 17, 2011 turned out to be a full-on SNOW DAY in Lake County!!! 6-8" of snow brought life to a full stop. Schools and businesses were closed. Dozens of accidents rendered travel around town difficult and dangerous. Everywhere branches and whole trees buckled under the weight... and came crashing down on wires, cars and buildings (got a message mid-morning that a tree had fallen on the parsonage!) Then, the power went off. No internet. No phone... land-line or cell. No heat. Pretty much nothing to do but make snow-men, hang out with the neighbors, and take a nap (yup... I had a week-day afternoon nap -- can't remember the last time that happened!!). It was a fun day, and actually, it was probably good to be slowed down to zero! Here's a hastily-assembled assortment of photos... I have more from later in the day when the sun came out a bit, but I'm too tired to upload 'em now. Maybe tomorrow... Enjoy!

Kenna's First Halloween : November 1, 2010: Yesterday Linda and I got to buzz over to C'dale and be a part of Kenna's first Halloween! It was more fun than the proverbial "barrel of monkeys"! Kenna was super-cute in her monkey costume (and her puppy suit, and her diaper!!! -- She was just SUPER cute no matter what she was wearing or doing)!! And Chris n Mellie were pretty cute, too... carvin' the pumpkin, decorating their house, and getting into the Halloween spirit! We had a great time joining in with the festivities!! Fun With Kenna : September 5, 2010 -- Linda and I were able to visit Chris, Mellie and Kenna Rose. We also got to see Kathy -- an added bonus! We were amazed to see how Kenna has grown and developed in the short time since we last saw her. She can now hold up her head really well, she's gaining coordination with her hands, and she's very responsive... you really get the feeling that two-way communication is happening. I only wish I knew her language better!

Precious Moments : August 23, 2010: Lucky me... today I got a chance to stop by and see Kenna and her Mom and Dad! First time in two weeks, and I was blown away to see the ways Kenna's changed in those 14 days. She's very alert and responsive, and looks all around to follow sounds, movements, logos on your shirt... whatever. A Visit With Kenna & Mellie : July 8, 2010: Shot over to C'dale in the afternoon to see Melanie and Kenna. When I returned from picking up some groceries for dinner, I found Linda's car in the parking lot... she'd driven over from Lakeport after work and surprised us all! We had a sweet time together. Moving Day for Mellie & Chris : May 16, 2010 -- FINALLY the day for Chris and Melanie's move arrived! With the help of a couple of hired hands (thanks Kathy!!) we (Chris, Melanie, Linda, Holly, Kathy and I) were able to get everything moved from Santa Rosa to their new home in Cloverdale. Took a few shots between loads... you can see it was a busy day, and much was accomplished! What a relief to get the job done BEFORE the arrival of the BABY!

Let the Nesting Begin! : Got to spend some time yesterday (May 3) helping Mellie and Chris prep for their BIG move to Cloverdale. Much of the day was spent in IKEA... always an interesting experience. (next week... we get to put all those flat cardboard boxes of particle board and weird hardware together to make cool stuff.) You can see that Mellie and Chris are pretty-much into the project. Good thing... she's got just a few weeks left!!

April on the Riverbank II : On Sunday (April 19) we were graced with a visit from Melanie and Chris. After hanging out for a while, Chris and I worked together on manly construction projects, while Mellie and Linda busied themselves with "girl stuff". Turned out part of that was putting together a little birthday celebration with me, complete with strawberries & ice cream and pinata-whacking. Our friends Mike, Barbara, and Joe stopped by -- Mike and Joe broke out guitars and we had a groovy time hangin' out as folks drifted by in their boats. A very mellow scene!! Also in this gallery you can see a couple of on-going projects, as well as the latest scenery and wildlife shots. Spring is springing on "The Riverbank".

Doggage! : Uh-Oh!! Mellie and Chris came over the mountain on The Ides of March, brining with them a VERY cute, VERY sweet little Havanese (that's a breed of dog from Cuba, for those of you who don't know (like I didn't until yesterday!!)) Seems he turned up Friday at the Animal Shelter where Mellie works... she sent Linda a link to the web site and the two of 'em arranged for a visit to check him out. He's available for adoption tomorrow. Now Linda and I are wrestling with the decision... (She woke up this morning twlling me she hadn't slept well last night because she started worrying about what would we do with him in July while I'm at seminary in So-Cal?!!!) Hmmmm.... any advice? Any suggestions for a name? (I suggested EWOK, but that didn't fly.) Towards the end of the gallery, you'll find some shots Melanie took of Freddie and Doug in December when Kim and Dustin were here. Farewell Joanne! : March 14 was the day Bob chose to meet with family and friends at the Mendocino Botanical Gardens to scatter Joanne’s ashes in accordance with her wishes. You will see from the photos that it was just the kind of outing Joanne loved… wandering with friends through the blooming rhododendrons, marveling at the wondrous beauty and variety of creation, sharing with loved ones laughter, tears, and the sheer joy of being alive and present to it all. When the trail brought us to the bluffs overlooking the Pacific, Bob selected just the right spot to release Joanne’s remains so they could merge and become one with the landscape she loved so dearly… We shared a brief service of interment during which Carol’s husband Steve captured the moment in which the last vestiges of Joanne’s earthly presence were set free. And then, after posing for a group shot, we wandered back along the trails, through the blossoms alive with chirping, darting hummingbirds, our hearts filled with memories of our dear Joanne...

Christmas 2008 : We were blessed this year to be able to share our Christmas with ALL our children... Ryan, Melanie, son-in-law Chris, Kimberly and Dustin!! We have had a wonderful, joyful meaningful time of connection and participation of the Spirit of Christmas... experiencing the bliss of harmony, mutual love and generosity. A highlight was sharing our church life with our children... All pitched in and helped with running errands, decorating the chapel, celebrating the birth of our Lord on Christmas Eve, making and enjoying Christmas dinner at the church for and with those in our community who were in need of food and fellowship. It has been a (not-so) little slice of heaven!!!

Mendocino Wedding : "Life is what happens when you're making other plans." (John Lennon)... On Tuesday, September 9 we headed out to the coast just south of Mendocino. The plan was to marry Cheryl Scovel and John Cole at 4:00 pm. All went well until 5 minutes before the wedding, when Linda tripped and fell while attempting to pin John's flower to his shirt. Turns out she dislocated her shoulder and fractured her humerus. She knew immediately from the severe pain that something was really wrong. Anxious not to disrupt the wedding, she insited that we help her to her bed, leave her there, and head to the beach. With great misgivings, I left her in the care of Claire, the young innkeeper on duty. The wedding was truly lovely... since Linda was laid up, we weren't able to get any shots during the ceremony, but I was able to squeeze off a couple of shots afterwards, before heading back to the Inn at Schoolhouse Creek. You will see that shortly after that, Linda got packed off to the Ft. Bragg hospital via ambulance. There, they dosed her with morphine and diladid (sp?,), took a bunch of x-rays (NOT fun!), and the orthopedic surgeon on call then had her put out briefly and relocated her humerus into its proper place. In the aftermath, we extended our stay at the Inn a couple of days so Linda could recover a bit before facing the windey, twisty mountainous drive from Ft. Bragg to Willits. Thankfully, we were able to make it home safely Friday afternoon. It was a different kind of adventure, but an adventure nonetheless...

Ryan Does the Vineman Triathlon : July 21: 2008 - Yesterday Ryan and some of his friends joined 2,000 other people from around the world to compete in the Vineman Triathlon... a half-Ironman consisting of a one point two-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13-mile run. It was great to see Ryan in his element, tearin' up the roads looking buff and focused. He completed the course in 4:51 (or thereabouts), and seemed quite happy with his result, which was about 40 minutes behind the top pro competitor. He said any time under 5 hours would have made him happy. CAUTION -- Ryan injured himself during the race, and some of the pictures of the aftermath are a bit gory. So, if you're squeamish. you might want to shield your peeps from some of the pics!!

Mellie, Chris, Stairs & Kayak : April 28, 2008: Melanie and Chris came up from Santa Rosa for another weekend of work (with a little play around the edges!!) Thanks to them, and the efforts of Ken Harper, Ray Duvall and Brian Stepp, we got a ton of work accomplished... enough to enable the Building Inspector to issue a Temporary Occupancy permit. This is a major hurdle to have crossed, and we are extremely relieved and grateful to our children and friends who helped us get to this point in our journey!

Easter to End of March 2008 : March 23, 2008: Easter Sunday dawned bright and beautiful... a perfect day to celebrate Resurrection and Rebirth and New Life. Our day was especially blessed with a visit from Chris and Melanie, who arrived last evening and immediately (and cheerfully!) pitched in and helped with last-minute (is there any other kind??) preparations for our special Joyful Celebration service at church. Worship was wonderful, with close to 90 in attendance, and many new faces added to our "regular" congregation. After church we shared brunch with the Dungan family at Riviera Heights Country Club, where the views of Mt. Konocti and the southern Clearlake Basin formed a gorgeous backdrop for our group photos. Later, we visited our (soon to be!) new home, and had fun hanging out together by the creek in the warm, sunny spring weather. It was a GREAT day to be alive!! God is good. Life is good!

Habitat For Tenacity (March 2008) : 3/5/08: Those who've been following the saga of our remodeling project might recall that we'd nicknamed it "Habitat For Insanity". Well, we decided that moniker might have been a magnet for trouble! So we've given it a new name, more truly expressive of what it has become. Despite continuing challenges, the project is moving forward and gaining momentum... we believe THIS will be the month in which we can move in and begin living in our new home. Better late than never!! The feature photo for this gallery (left) shows the roof (FINALLY) nearing conclusion -- it should be done by week's end. This will mark the end of a very long, frustrating, and costly ordeal (the originally-installed roof, which was never completed, was done incorrectly, leaked in the first heavy rain, and had to be stripped off the house and replaced (OUCH!!)!!

Crash Landing! : After careening off a ladder two stories up, my Dad seriously injured his left arm and cracked six ribs and his left scapula. It has been a long few days, but things are looking up. In honor of my Dad's need to document EVERYTHING, we have been snapping a few shots along the way. Enjoy! 11/14/07 - A message from Karl "Many thanks to all those who have showered us with love, support and encouragement over the past 5 days. From the time I hit the ground, folks began running to help me and I can only imagine that they were sent by God." Habitat For Insanity - At Last, We Get A Weather-Proof Roof!! : Novermber 8 - The project is grinding along... Slowly but surely the house is beginning to look like it might become a home someday!! As the photos in this gallery reveal, we have been blessed with perfect weather during the end of October and the beginning of November. This has enabled the crew to complete the siding, and FINALLY BEGIN INSTALLING THE ROOFING!! At the same time, insulation and drywalling is being installed inside, the electrician, plumber, and HVAC guy have all been working away to get everything in place before the walls and ceilings are covered up. We have not yet set a moving date, but it's looking like it might actually happen someday!!

Habitat For Insanity : October 24, 2007 - Remember the YES song that went, "I'm getting closer to the edge..."? Those words came to mind as I was uploading photos from the last couple of weeks of construction. As you will see, we ARE getting closer to completion of our remodeling project... most of the windows are in, most of the siding is on, the rough-in wiring and plumbing is pretty much done, and some much-needed concrete work has been completed, making it possible to move forward with some other things like the staircase connecting the upper and lower floors. But much remains to be done... for starts, we STILL do not have the roofing installed, which is a HUGE concern, now that the rainy season is right around the corner (and in fact has made an early start!). Until that happens, we have to wait for insulation, drywall, painting, flooring, finish carpentry, etc.. Which brings us to closer to the EDGE... of sanity, of patience, of humor, of credit limits... (A recent Linda quote says it all... "I'm SO done with this!") The (revised) contract completion date of September 30 came and went. We're rapidly closing in on OCTOBER 30 and the end's still down the road a fair bit, it seems. Maybe we'll have something extra-special to be grateful for this Thanksgiving! Half-joking and half-serious, we have dubbed the project "HABITAT FOR INSANITY"!

Harbor Lane Remodel: We Get A Roof - FOR REALl!! : Well, the long-awaited day finally arrived! Over the weekend, Clint got all the SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) labeled and oriented, ready for installation. At about 9:30am Monday, the crane arrived, and the crew, which had already been hard at work getting everything ready, shifted into high gear! By the end of a long day, we had a roof! As you will see from the following photos, it was quite a challenging undertaking, and Linda and I are thrilled with the result and proud of Clint, Ryan, Robert, Kenny, Justin, Antwan, Dustin and Bob (?) the "crane guy", who showed great skill and teamwork and made it all come together smoothly.

Harbor Lane Remodel: We Get A Roof - Sort Of! : September 20, 2007 - Looking at the following photos, you may wonder if anything's been accomplished since I posted the last batch (gallery = September I). Sometimes the thought drifts through our minds as well, but actually, much progress has been made, although it's often subtle and not easily noticed at first glance. For example, keep an eye on the tails of the beams through this sequence, and you may notice a change. The main focus over the past couple of weeks has been preparing to install the roof over the new section. As you'll see, it's become a race with Mother Nature, which she won, as we were hit with an early rain storm yesterday (ironically, my morning meditations this week from "The Daily Message" have been from the Book of Job!!). The revised completion date for the job is September 30... think we'll make it???

Harbor Lane Remodel: September I : Well, summer's drawing to a close and maybe our building project will do the same sometime in the next month!! To the casual observer, it may seem like not much is happening, but if you look closely, you will see significant changes taking place in the framing. Not so easily observed is all the behind-the-scenes work on plumbing, etc., which is coming along nicely. Next week (September 17), another crane is scheduled to arrive to help install the Structural Insulated Panels (SIP) that will form the roof over the new section. Harbor Lane Remodel: Mid-August to September : The project is gaining momentum, and our new home is really taking shape! Friday, August 24 was a BIG day... the main support beams for the new roof/ceiling were delivered and set in place. With this step accomplished, the crew can now move ahead quickly to finish the framing and install the new roof. Once that's accomplished, windows can be set, drywall and siding can be installed, etc., and maybe, just maybe, we'll be able to move in sometime early in October. (The builder's revised completion date is September 30) Our fingers are crossed...

Harbor Lane Remodel: July thru Mid-August : As you'll see here, we've got our own full-blown money-pit going!! We'd hoped to move in at the beginning of July, but now we're thinking we'll be lucky to get in by Hallowe'en!! The good news is, we hit an important turning point this week (August 13) at which there seemed to be more CONstruction than DEstruction happening! Our contractor assures us that things are going to start moving quickly now. Stay tuned... In the meantime, enjoy the mayhem!

The Kids Saved Our Butts!! : ** Lucky for us, in the final week of our move from Cobb to Clearlake, Ryan, Melanie and Dustin hit the PAUSE button in their lives and came from Boulder, Jacksonville, and Santa Rosa to literally lift us up and carry us and all our junk off the mountain! We simply could NOT have done it without them! Along the way, despite all the hard work and hot weather, we had many precious moments of fun and laughter. Linda and I feel richly blessed by their love and friendship!
